Balcony ‘sunshade’: How can you increase the natural light in your home? – Françoise’s testimony in Nogent sur Marne

Living in a flat with a balcony can be extremely pleasant, in particular enabling you to enjoy the fine weather without having to leave your home. But very often, the balconies are stacked one above the other from floor to floor, with each balcony acting like a sunshade, casting a shadow on the one below. This means that lower level flats often receive very little natural light and the rooms are frequently dark. This is the first-hand account of Françoise L., an Espaciel customer from Nogent sur Marne who found herself in precisely this situation, and who explains how the reflectors installed on her guardrail changed her life!

Espaciel: What were your reasons for choosing to install Espaciel light reflectors?
installation_flFrançoise: For the past two years I’ve been living in a south-facing flat that overlooks a large wooded park. My flat is spacious and is situated on the 2nd floor of a prestigious block built in the 1980s. The living and dining rooms give onto a broad balcony that runs the whole width of the façade. My neighbours above have the same type of balcony and it stops the sunlight from entering my flat… I didn’t notice the lack of light when I came to view the flat, but as soon as I moved in it immediately became a big problem for me. The fact is these balconies act like sunshades: a large percentage of the natural light and sunlight is simply blocked by the floor above; I get a little bit of sunlight that hits my balcony just behind the guardrail but it never makes it right into the room. To make matters worse, the trees in the park opposite the balcony also block out the light. It’s this lack of sunshine in my flat that led me to start looking for a solution on the Internet. That’s how I discovered Espaciel online, the only company offering an effective and ready-to-install system. Since it matches both my needs and my budget, I decided to equip my entire balcony.

Espaciel: Can you describe your installation and tell us how it works?

Françoise: My balcony is 9 metres long and 2.40 metres wide: I decided to install light reflectors along the entire length of the guardrail. This means the reflectors are directed up at the sky: they capture the natural light and redirect it from the balcony into the flat itself. When the weather is overcast you can still see the gain in light throughout the room, but when it’s sunny the effect is spectacular! In any case it changes the atmosphere and puts an end to the sunshade effect of the balcony above!

Espaciel: How did you find the installation of your reflectors?
Françoise: I’m not much of a DIY person so I didn’t know if I’d be able to attach my reflectors. I therefore contacted Espaciel and Alexi advised me to get in touch with a handyman via Frizbiz, a collaborative platform of which Espaciel is a partner. I explained what I needed on their website and very quickly Marco, a handyman from the Paris region, got in touch with me offering to do the installation. We agreed on a date and he came to my flat to install the reflectors! When I saw him do it, I realised that the system of attachment to the guardrail was extremely simple indeed. I could even have done it myself, but I was delighted with Marco’s service, since he managed to install all 12 reflectors in a short morning’s work! All I needed to do was set the angle I wanted, and hey presto the sunshade effect was a thing of the past.

Espaciel: And what do the Espaciel light reflectors give you today?

Françoise: They add 100% more cheerfulness in my flat! I spend a great deal of time at home and before hearing about Espaciel I didn’t know how I was going to carry on living without daylight. Without these reflectors I would undoubtedly have looked for another flat and moved. These reflectors have genuinely changed my life. It was particularly frustrating in summer: I could see that the sun was shining outside but it never penetrated into my flat. Today, for example, the sun is shining and I can clearly see the effects of the Espaciel products. I have no regrets about having chosen them!

Another important point I must mention concerns heat: since the flat is south-facing, I didn’t want the reflectors to add any extra heat. My flat is already very well heated and I didn’t want it to get overheated during the summertime. Alexi offered me the option of having special reflectors equipped with infrared filters that Espaciel supplies on request. These reflectors capture the infrared light, the part of the sunshine that generates heat, and just reflect back the pure sunlight, without any heat.

A last positive point that I want to add about this product: the extremely easy maintenance. I clean them from time to time with a microfiber cloth and a little water and that’s it!

Espaciel: Is there anything you’d like to add?

Françoise: I would advise anyone who has a dark home to take the plunge without hesitating! Indeed, I talk about it to everyone who comes to my flat, as well as all the other people in the flats. For me, a bright house is absolutely essential and if you lack natural light you must do something about it! The Espaciel light reflectors are undoubtedly the best compromise I’ve found: extremely simple procedure, no building work and no need to obtain the agreement of the other residents. To sum it up, if I had it all to do over again, I wouldn’t hesitate!
